Franco Mastantuono was born on August 14, 2007, in Azul, Argentina. He is of Italian desecent as he holds dual Argentine-Italian citizenship. He is the cousin of Jose Raul Iglesias, a former player.
Mastantuono initially had interest in tennis as while growing up before he changed to be a footballer. He began his career at the youth level with River de Azul in 2011, where his father was the coach. He later joined Club Cemento youth academy in 2018.
He moved to River Plate in 2019 where he continued his progression through their academy. He signed his first contract with the club, a two deal with a €30 million release clause in August 2023. He was called to the first team training the following month. However, Mastantuono became part of the squad for the pre-season in 2024 and made his debut for the club in a friendly match against the Mexican side Monterrey. He scored his first goal for the club in a 3-0 victory against Excursionistas on February 8, 2024.
Mastantuono who is of Italian descent, decided to play for Argentina. He represented Argentina at the under-17 and under-21 levels before being called up to the senior team in late May 2025 by the manager Lionel Scaloni ahead of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Colombia. He made his debut for the senior team on June 5 in a 1-0 away win against Chile where he came on as a substitute for Thiago Almada.
