Born Mathis Rayan Cherki on August 17, 2003 in Lyon, France. He is of mixed ethnicity as his father, Fabrice Amsellem, is of Italian descent and his mother is of Algerian descent.
Cherki began his career at the youth level with Saint-Priest in 2009 and also went through the youth academy of Lyon. He signed his professional contract with Lyon on July 7, 2019, and made his professional debut in a match against Dijon on Octoner 19, 2019. He scored his first goal for the senior team in a 7-0 victory against Bourg-en-Bresse in the Coupe de France, on January 4, 2020.
He joined the English club Mancjester City on a five-year deal, on June 10, 2025, for a reported fee of €36.5 m.
